OerlikonPosition: Process R&D Engineer Location: Charlotte, NC The R&D Engineer will support the Process Technology Vertical in the Additive Manufacturing R&D Center (US). The Process Technology Vertical is responsible for the research and development of metal printing processes and delivering process specifications to internal stakeholders. The engineer will be responsible for executing R&D projects within the process technology vertical and support projects in other R&D technology verticals. The R&D Engineer is responsible for developing and executing test plans, collecting and analyzing data, generating written reports, and communicating results to internal and external stakeholders. The position requires hands-on laboratory work with metal powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition equipment, as well as relevant process diagnostic and quality monitoring equipment. The candidate should possess experience operating, developing process parameters, and collecting data from these pieces of process equipment. Furthermore, the candidate should be capable of analyzing data using computer software. Knowledge and previous use of (a) 3D printing process modelling tools and (b) subtractive machining processes is considered an advantage. Responsibilities Develop and execute R&D projects centering on the printing process aspects of metal powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition equipment. Evaluate new and novel metal printing process equipment and in-process sensing techniques. Analyze project results, compare with existing scientific knowledge, and communicate project outcomes to internal and external stakeholders. Operation of R&D printers and data collection equipment for the purpose of conducting R&D. Provide technical support within the R&D team and to the services team. Generate internal process specifications beginning from basic research (TRL 1-3), applied research (TRL-4-6) and assist transition through TRL 7. Support R&D projects led by other technology verticals, through the generation and reporting of data. Provide input to guide selection of new equipment. Timely reports delivery to the supervisor/team Work together with AM Technical Team, AM Alloy Designers, Powder Specialists, H&S Team, Students, Test Labs and support external and internal research activities. We expect Master of Science/Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Welding Engineering, or Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering At least 1 year experience with metal additive manufacturing processes or at least 3 years industrial conventional manufacturing setting where a primary function was process development. Capable of operating metal powder bed fusion and/or directed energy deposition systems. Understands key process parameters and their effect on build quality and performance. Knowledge of in process quality monitoring strategies for metal AM and conventional manufacturing processes. Ability to design experiments, generate and collect data, analyse data using various analysis methods Ability to generate and clearly present technical data to both technical and non-technical audience Ability to manage multiple scientific experiments. Knowledge and previous use of (a) 3D printing process modelling tools and (b) subtractive machining processes is considered an advantage. Self-motivated Ability to train others how to use the lab equipment Team player with excellent communication skills Fluent in English, ability to communicate in German would be an advantage Operation of Powder Bed Fusion and Directed Energy Deposition process equipment.
