JOB PURPOSE
To support the setting Out department in achieving their goals and objectives;
The Setting out department is a key part of production.
Its role is multi-disciplined and is responsible for the development of clients and designers aspirations into finished products. In doing this it has to be mindful of many things, costs, lead times for procurement and fabrication, delivery to site, build-ability, practicality, fit for purpose etc. As products develop communications is key within the company and outside, monitoring changes of design and report these in the correct manner so that variations of the contract can be assessed. There are standard forms to act as permanent records for the progress of projects and these must be adhered to.
The primary function of the CAD Technician / Apprentice Setter Out is to work in 2D and 3 D drawings producing accurate working drawings to enable the workshop to manufacture in a lean manner. A large proportion of the work for this Apprenticeship role in the early stages will be to ‘take off’ and produce cutting lists for materials to be ordered and the machinists to mill the raw materials.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Setting Out Department to;
Produce detailed joinery construction drawings using CAD & Inventor;
Take off materials and produce cutting lists;
Identify Value engineering options;
Identify Critical Purchases and respond;
Liaise with the CAD Technicians / Setter Outs to produce accurate cutting lists;
Liaise with the buyer and Process orders in the correct and prompt manner;
Attend handover meetings and work to programmes identified within;
Liaise with Production to assess best methods of manufacture;
Lessons learnt at end of project with production and contract teams;
Produce RFI - Request for information;
Liaise with QS on amended drawings;
Attend update meetings when required;
Attend quarterly Setting out meetings;
Carry out site based surveys.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Desire to be a CAD Technician / Setter Out and understand what the job entails;
Ability to read 2D and 3D drawings;
Have an eye for design;
Be able to learn drawing programmes. Full training would be provided;
Focus on quality detailed drawings;
Competent to work on own initiative;
Work closely in a tight knit team;
Take direction from senior members of the team /mentor as directed;
Work to tight deadlines;
Pro-active in improving systems of work and fabrication techniques;
Be punctual and presentable at all times, whether in the workshop or at college;
Be flexible in their working times to suit business needs – overtime hours will be paid for additional hours worked.
PERSON
Demonstrate a desire to work towards the successful completion of an approved qualification to attain NVQ Level 3 (preferred) – time away from the workshop will be provided to attend college – this will also involve evening classes and homework;
CSCS Card for on-site work – if directed – Training would provided (Desirable);
A GCSE in Woodwork / Technology / Art / Design (Desirable);
Experience of using drawing packages would be useful (Desirable);
Reference from school (relevant subject), previous employer or work experience;
As the position is for an Apprentice no previous job experience is necessary, however the Ideal candidate will demonstrate evidence of part time / full time employment working within a team (Desirable);
Be able to demonstrate a desire to become a CAD Technician, through photographs or examples of projects, whether they are with a company or for friends / relatives / schoolwork (Desirable);
Ideally the position would suit someone with a background in joinery who has a keen eye for detail (Desirable).
Basic IT Skills.
The candidate will be trained to;
Produce working drawings.
Produce cutting lists from drawings.
Identify suitable construction methods and consider risk and health and safety implications of their drawings.
Knowledge of joinery an advantage.
