One short essay on a subject relevant to the work of the Court (maximum of 750 words, single spaced, type written). Contract Duration Interns are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement). Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months. Organisational Context The Office of the Prosecutor investigates and prosecutes genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by nationals of a State Party or on the territory of a State Party on or after 1 July 2002, the date of entry into force of the Rome Statute. The Prosecution Division (PD) comprises the Prosecution and Appeals Sections. The Division is central to the core mandate of the Court; namely, the conduct of fair, effective and expeditious investigations and criminal proceedings in accordance with the Rome Statute. It is responsible for giving legal guidance to investigators and litigating cases before the Chambers of all three judicial divisions, preparing written submissions and other filings to the Chambers and participating in investigative and case-preparation activities in the Joint Teams. Senior Trial Lawyers from the Prosecution Section also lead the integrated teams and provide overall guidance on the investigation of cases, as well as leading trial teams before Chambers of the Court. The Appeals Section, led by the Senior Appeals Counsel, litigates all interlocutory and final appeals before the Appeals Chamber, prepares all applications for leave to appeal and responses to such applications filed by the defence and other parties before the Trial Chambers, drafts key trial filings, in particular those involving significant and novel international criminal law and procedural law issues. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct legal research Assist in the drafting of legal filings Participate in evidence analysis and review of documents for disclosure Contribute to discussions at team meetings Required Qualifications Education: All Candidates must have a law degree or be in the final stages of their legal studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance. Experience: Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court is an asset. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments. Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively). Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications). Knowledge of Casemap, TRIM, and Ringtail is an asset. Knowledge of Languages: Proficiency in one of the working languages of the Court, French or English, is required. Working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) is an asset. Remuneration Please note that the ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide any reimbursement for any expenses incurred during the internship. Accordingly, applicants must have the necessary resources or other financial support for the duration of the internship for which they have been selected. The OTP is willing to provide information to support a candidate’s application for financial support through other institutions.
