k-plus-s1856 - 1888: The roots of the K + S Group date back to the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the first fertilizer factories were manufactured in Germany, mainly producing phosphate and superphosphate. At this time Justus von Liebig already propagated the use of potash fertilizers. But it was not until the discovery of potassium salts in Staßfurt in 1856 and the construction of the first potash mines in the world that this raw material was available in large quantities. Soon after, farmers used the potash as an effective mineral fertilizer, which together with phosphate and nitrogen significantly increased harvest yields. The growing demand for these plant nutrients led to a boom in the German potash and fertilizer industry. In the 1880s, the mineral fertilization finally took hold and revolutionized agriculture. 1889: Foundation of the "Stock company for mining and deep drilling" in Goslar, from which Salzdetfurth AG (1899) - the oldest predecessor of today's K + S Aktiengesellschaft - emerges.
