Scientific computing is a strategic asset for AstraZeneca. We are looking for a hands-on DevOps engineer with the technical leadership capabilities to architect and implement a cutting edge, world-class, scientific computing environment that is flexible, scalable and available to all science units across the globe. You will have demonstrated experience in high performance computing (HPC) and expertise in a subset of the technologies and skills outlined below. We seek a do-er that continuously explores new ways to address the computational and informatics needs of the science community globally. You will have a long term focus to help drive the agility needed, combining internal / external clouds, containers, virtualization for our complex and often bespoke software tools to support innovation.
Required Skills & Knowledge
As a Scientific Computing Lead you will have:
Bachelors degree in Computational, Physical or Biological Science, Engineering or equivalent area (Masters or PhD preferred)
Extensive knowledge of high-performance scientific computing
Experience within a research-based scientific computing environment essential, preferably Life Sciences (Pharma, BioTech)
Recognition as an architect in the external community (within and/or beyond the pharmaceutical industry)
Strong, hands-on experience designing and configuring large-scale computing environments such as Linux clusters, specialized storage and large-scale, parallel file systems (e.g. GPFS/Lustre) and cloud computing infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Google, Azure)
Strong background in UNIX/Linux
Hands-on experience deploying and operating Linux variants in cloud environment, including solutions deployment, configuration and management
Configuration management experience (e.g. chef, salt, puppet, ansible, cfengine)
Experience in managing a virtualized private cloud environment (e.g. OpenStack)
Experience with container technology (e.g. Docker)
Experience with object file systems (e.g. Ceph, SwiftStack)
Experience with data management systems (e.g. iRODS, Ngenea, Nirvana)
Demonstrated development experience with a variety of programming languages, tools and technologies (Java/C++, Python/Ruby/Perl, SQL, AWS )
Experience within a research-based scientific computing environment
Experience providing scientific software for users: configuring, installing, tuning and maintaining such software
Experience of developing and managing relationships with 3rd party suppliers
